Krista King, Founder and CEO, Fitlandia
With more than 1,600 founder and investor members, Startup Haven is a treasure trove of awesome startup stories. Attending Startup Haven events is a great way to meet other founders and investors and to begin building relationships. But getting to a founder or investor’s full story is difficult.
This week we had the pleasure of speaking with Christa King, founder and CEO of Fitlandia. Leaving a successful career for the vagaries, hard work and risk of a startup company takes a combination of nerve, confidence and folly. We think Christa has a great balance of all three and we hope you find Christa’s story enlightening, inspiring and confirming.
In 25 words or less, describe what Fitlandia does. Fitlandia is on a mission to end yo-yo dieting by first helping people change the neural pathways in their brain.
What was the inspiration for Fitlandia?
Cracking my own code to life-long health and wellness by first strengthening my mind.
What were you doing before you started working on Fitlandia?
I had a successful 23-yr career in hospitality revenue management doing pricing strategies, competitive analysis and demand forecasting.
What has been the biggest barrier for you as a founder?
Having enough time.
What’s your best hack for dealing with the demands of running a startup?
Putting my health first to optimize my mental performance and get more done than most do with the same time constraints.
What’s the biggest mistake you’ve made along the way?
Spending too much money on technology.
What has been the biggest win for Fitlandia?
Entering into corporate wellness in 2018.
How is/was Fitlandia funded and how does it make money?
Fitlandia is 100% self-funded and we make money through our month memberships to The Mind Zoning® Academy, our nutrition + mindset program: 30 Days to Thriving, as well as our corporate wellness workshops and programs.
What do you like most about being a founder?
Freedom to fail. Freedom to be wildly successful.
What do you like least?
Doing the work alone until I’m big enough to hire a team.
If you weren’t building Fitlandia, what else would you be doing now?
My first love will always be hotel revenue management.
What advice do you have for founders who are two stages behind you?
You MUST know your “why” and stay positive at every turn.
What would make life better for founders in your city?
Sliding scale co-working space.
What help can you offer to other Startup Haven member founders?
I am the queen of positivity and resilience. If anyone is at the fork in the road of giving up or pressing on, I can help them get radically clear about the right thing to do (which could mean just crafting a better transition plan).
What do you need… what’s your “ask”?
Exposure. Exposure. Exposure. Having this opportunity is a gift!
How has Startup Haven helped you on your journey?
Well, I love to play poker, but it’s given me a sense of community that can often be missed in the early stages of building a company. It’s so amazing to have a group of people that are cheering me on along my journey…and that I can do the same for them.
What question didn’t we ask you that we should have and what’s the answer?
“What’s your ‘why’?” I believe people are lacking a safe place to heal their unhealthy relationship with food and alcohol. They need education on how the unconscious mind drives 90% of their behavior, but more importantly…that they have the power to change. Getting this message out so that people can start thriving is what drives me every day.
That is almost everything we learned about Christa and Fitlandia this month, if you would like to learn more about Christa or her startup you will just have to seek her out at one of our events. We don’t know about you, but talking to someone who is so full of positivity would brighten our month any day of the week, in fact it just has! Thanks, Christa!
