Startup Poker 2.0 Launching in San Francisco

After eight years of running continuously in Seattle, more than a year running in Portland and about eight months running in San Diego, I am over-the-top delighted to announce that Poker 2.0 is now launching in San Francisco.  There's a lot to be excited about. Firstly, this is city number four.  Wow.  Cool. Why cool? Well, by all accounts, Startup Poker 2.0 has made a [...]

Seattle, January 2014 Recap

Our host this month was the Columbia Tower Club, perched atop the tallest building in Seattle.  Wow.  What a place.   The ambiance, the food, the service... all outstanding.  The Club underwent a $3.5M makeover about a year ago and shed it's stuffy old 'gentlemen's club' attitude and transformed itself into a sophisticated and swanky meeting place for business and pleasure.  We were doing both last night [...]

Seattle Holiday 2013 Event Recap

The holidays are usually a bit of crap shoot when it comes to Poker 2.0.  Over the years, we've had December events with 80 attendees and we've had events with 15 attendees.  But it's unusual to have the typical four-table showing like we did this month.  I'm not complaining... four full tables is a great number!  We even had a couple of newbies that made [...]

Seattle, September 2013 Event Recap

Tonight was remarkable for several reasons. First, we had more first-time players than we've had at one event in a long while.  By show of hands, I'd estimate at least 25% of the crowd.  New players means more new relationships... and that's what Startup Poker 2.0 is all about. Second, we were hosted in the new SURF Cabana event space.  It's really a great space. [...]

San Diego, September 2013 event recap

We had a blast at the third San Diego Startup Poker 2.0 event! We welcomed several new faces to Poker 2.0, including Rareş Săftoiu and Bach Le of Shopventory, who recently returned from TechStars in Boulder. We continued to improve the tournament flow based on feedback. This time, we rotated people to different tournament tables with the aim of keeping total chips at each table [...]

Seattle, August 2013 Event Recap

First off, kudos to the great crowd that suffered through hellish Mariners traffic and sacrificed one of the few remaining sunny summer evenings to mix it up at the tables at SURF Incubator.  We ended up a bit lighter on players than usual but I gotta say the player announcements at the beginning were the best in a long time -- at least a dozen players [...]

Seattle, July 2013 Event Recap

Last night was crazy fun.  We had a packed house at the fabulous SURF Incubator and there were lots of new faces. We also experimented with the MVP of a new buyin structure that let the big dogs wrestle with each other without getting slobber all over the rest of us small fish.  It was a hit... and it lead to one of the biggest [...]

Seattle, April 2013 Event Recap

This was a double-header month for Poker 2.0.  In addition to the regular monthly event, we also hosted a special event exclusively for the Windows Azure/TechStars Accelerator program.   Both happened in the Easy and both were a blast. Our sponsors for the regular event were Windows Azure and Turnstone furniture.  Miranda Luna from Windows Azure and Jimmy Kwan from Turnstone are great supporters of the [...]

Seattle, March 2013 Event Recap

Our host this month was The Makers Space, the beautiful co-working space in Belltown. Hands down the winner for coolest interior of all the co-working spaces. Since everyone has to come to me to get their rebuys, I get to hear all the stories of suck outs and bad beats.  It was definitely a big night for both... and that means a bigger pot at [...]

Portland, March 2013 Event Recap

The March Poker 2.0 in Portland was great, with Portland State Business Accelerator and OnTheGo Platforms hosting. Poker is proving to be a great equalizer; evidence can be seen in the final table with all newcomers and most self-identifying as beginner poker players. We also learned a lesson about the appetites of the poker-playing PDX startup community and so we'll plan to have plenty of [...]
